With the 2021/2022 University league fast approaching, coaches are preparing and finalising squads for the new season.
After three weeks of intense
pre-season training, the UOL men's first team took on the second team for an
inhouse match consisting of three 30-minute periods.
This gave both teams a chance to
work on their shape and to have a look at new players in a match situation.
1st period:
The second team nearly opened the mark after 5 minutes after putting pressure on the first team keeper leading him to misplace a pass.
The second team insisted on
playing out from the back throughout the entire game despite being under
intense pressure by the first team.
This nearly cost them a goal when
they lost the ball deep in their own half, but fortunately for the second team,
the first team couldn't capitalise on the mistake.
Tom Macrow had the first clear chance of the game in the 9th minute: he received the ball after a good run in behind the defence but saw his shot saved by the first team keeper.
The first team created the more clear-cut
chances from then on, with Dan Lewis' seeing his shot blocked by the keeper, who
was very quick to come off his line to make a great save. Number 16 nearly
scored seconds after, with his shot going just inches over the bar, and Luca
Katchburian almost saw his shot go in after going for a cheeky chip from the
edge of the box, which went just inches over the bar.
The second team responded by keeping possession further up and inside the first team's half.
Finally, late in the first period,
the second team opened the mark after Joe Ctori scored a beautiful goal from
outside the box.
2nd period:
The second team started the second period strongly. Liam slotted the ball in the back of the net after a great run down the wing by the second team striker, who gave him the perfect pass.
2-0 for the second team!
Zak who came on as a striker in the second period showed some great hold up play and technique by keeping control of the ball while under pressure from defenders and had the composure to pick out some good passes.
Shomari Healy, who was playing
right-back for the second team grew stronger as the match went on. He was a
constant threat and consistently made himself available for his teammates, and
was defensively solid. He nearly earned himself an assist after an intense
sprint on the right-hand side, where he kept composure to provide an excellent
cross for his striker, who saw his shot deflected for a corner.
3rd period:
Dan Lewis eventually reduced the mark after firing a bullet from inside the box.
The second team nearly scored a
third goal after great link-up play between Joe Threlfall and number 17.
Number 17 was rewarded shortly
after when he scored the 3-1 goal for the second team after a defensive
scramble in the first team's box.
Finally, the second team sealed the deal by scoring from a corner to make it 4-1 for the second team.
Overall, it was an intense game
with both teams fighting hard for possession, but the second team was just more
organised on the day and earned themselves deserved a win.
